PIONEER BDR-205

Pioneer may be forgiven for wondering why they had bothered as reaction to news concerning their new BDR-205 Blu-ray writer which, thanks to boasting 12x write speed, manages to claim the mantel of being the fastest BD writer to date has at best, and in the main, been rather muted in terms of excitement.

In fairness, however, and having thought about it for all of a few minutes (perhaps less, in honesty) as much as we’d like to get excited about it ourselves – I mean, this is the first 12x BD writer we’re talking about here – we just can’t. This is not the fault of Pioneer. This is not a reflection on the BDR-205. It’s just that, all said and done, its just inherently not all that interesting. That said, we’re going to give it a go.
Or then again, perhaps not. No perhaps we’ll just let Pioneer’s press release (and, specifically, its abject dullness) give you an idea as to just how excited Pioneer are themselves concerning the BDR-205 9and in this respect, its all quite telling).

At the time of writing this really is an early adopter's device, for people with a lot of spare cash. There's little doubt the price will plummet when more blue laser diodes become available (they're currently being hogged by Sony for its PlayStation 3), but for the moment this 25GB DVD drive is a bit of a luxury.
